Alas, Babylon Quote

*Authors Note:  This is a response to a writing assignment given to me where I have to pick a quote in my independant reading book and discuss its importance.

"When a man dies, and his children die with him, then he is dead entirely, leaving nothing to show."
-Mark Bragg

Randy's brother Mark already knows there will be a nuclear war, and since he's stationed at an important military base, and that's exactly where the Soviet Union will be pointing their weapons, he knows he's going to die.  But he also knows that just because he dies, doesn't mean his family has to, so he sends his wife and children down to live in Florida with Randy.  The quote above is extremely important in the book, because it's where he decides to deliver his family to Randy.  If Randy didn't have the wife and children there, he most certainly would've died almost immediately, because although Randy leads them, without their contribution and ideas, he wouldn't have stood a chance to survive.

  1. sometimes I like to tell myself that even though you save your family, that doesn't mean you've saved them entirely. By risking your life for them you are showing them that they are your greatest weakness. To be a person's greatest weakness is an important role, for without it the person wouldn't be human. Everyone has a weakness, in this case it is his family, but to others it could be anything that you care for. I like how you put just enough in your essay to leave a mark so to speak, but not enough to heal it like some people do. By reading this piece i can tell you love your family very much.

  2. You should have made it a little longer. You picked a good quote to write about.

  3. I think that you picked a great quote to talk about. It could be longer but it got the point and was strong.

  4. I think the quote does seem very important to the book. It started off like a summary, but then it got into your thoughts. It was a little short, but in a way that's good; It never got boring or felt forced.

  5. You chose a nice, strong quote to write about. You described why this quote is important to this book well. This book sounds interesting. What book is it?

  6. Thanks for the comments, guys, they help a lot. The book is called Alas, Babylon, and it's written by Pat Frank.

  7. This had a clear point and you chose a good quote. I think it might be better if you use a introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion instead of just one paragraph.

  8. That's an interesting quote. It really makes good sense if you think about it. Just one question: Who's Randy?

  9. Randy is the main character, and he's Mark's brother, the guy who said the quote.
